Several factors should be considered while choosing & installing extinguishers.
By classifying fires depending on the combustibles involved,we can select the best suited Fire Extinguisher
Type of Fire Type of Material involved in the Fire
Class A Fires involving materials such as wood, paper or textiles.
Class B Fires involving Flammable liquids such as petroleum products, paints and other oils
Class C Fire caused by combustible gases like hydrogen, butane, methane etc.
Class D Fires casued by combustible metals like magnesium, potassium, aluminium etc.
Class E Fires involving live electrical apparatus like wires, switches etc
Class F Fires that happen in large oil fryer in kitchens .

Below are the different types of extinguishers

Types of Fire Extinguishers

Foam Extinguishers

Foam fire Extinguishers can be used on Class A type fire and Class B type fire.On flaming liquids, the foams sprayed creates a barrier between fuel and the flame, extinguishing the fire.

Dry Powder Extinguishers

Powder extinguishers are widely used because they are multi-purpose fire extinguisher as they can be used on Class A, B and C fires.

They are not recommended for fires inside closed environments because the powder spread all around will create loss of visibility and may also create breathing problems for the stressed occupants who are trying to escape.

Wet Chemical Extinguishers

Wet Chemical Extinguisher : Wet chemical extinguishers are generally suited for use on F Class fires, which involving cooking oils and fats.Industrial kitchens in large restaurants must have this type of extinguisher

Wet chemical extinguishers create a layer of foam on the surface of the burning oil or fat, preventing oxygen from fueling the fire any further. The spray also has a cooling effect.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extinguishers

CO2 extinguishers are preferred to be used on use on fires involving electrical apparatus i.e places like offices or server rooms. Co2 extinguishers when used cuts off the supply of oxygen to the fire, there by slowly extinguishing the fire.

Unlike most other types of extinguishers CO2 extinguishers do not leave any residue.
